The Social Media Experiment

Comedian Jack Vale makes an important point about privacy and social media in his latest video – The Social Media Experiment.

If you’re unfamiliar with ValeJack is a comedian who has a popular YouTube channel featuring hidden-cameras and pranks.

His latest video started with a search through Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and other social media platforms for posts tagged near his location. He then filmed as he passed the targets in the street and approached them in restaurants, weaving information into the conversation that he had gleaned about them from their social postings.

As Vale says in his introduction:

“Hi, I’m Jack Vale, and I wanted to see how easy it would be to get personal information from complete strangers. And while I’m at it, of course, freak ‘em out a little bit.  Keep in mind when you watch this video, I got all of this information just by searching their personal social media posts, and I got it by searching for the closest Twitter, Instagram and other social media posts to my current location.  Let’s go!”

The results are interesting, and work as a cautionary tale. The experiment highlights the more serious point that what we reveal online through social media is not presented in the bubble of our own social circles.

View the “reveals” video after the main video, then share this. Discuss it. We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
