Chandler \n\nAbout the Session: \nDisaster preparedness requires an assessment of risks\, consequences and potential impacts from dangers and threatening circumstances. However\, when it comes to perceiving risks\, threats and dangers people often get things “wrong” – at least when perceptions of risks are compared to rational and empirical assessments of actual dangers. People tend to exaggerate some risks while disregarding others. This session calls us to recognize that the powerful subconscious system of risk perception that helps humans gauge and respond to dangers\, works sometimes\, but can sometimes lead us to make mistakes that can result in failures to prepare\, respond\, behave appropriately or even to behave in ways to make the situation worse. With increased self-awareness we may be able to improve our risk perception performance and thereby enhance our decisions and planning for disaster mitigation and preparedness. \nAbout Robert Chandler\nRobert Chandler\, Ph.D. is an internationally recognized expert on multiple aspects of communication and human interaction in specialized contexts.
