DESCRIPTION:Firestorm Principals Guy Higgins and Jennifer Freedman will be presenting a session at the 2017 CEMA Conference (Colorado Emergency Management Association) in Colorado Springs\, Colorado. The conference convenes February 28 through March 2\, 2017. Their session\, entitled Lessons Learned\, Admired or Observed\, will be held on Wednesday\, March 1 at 3:15 p.m. \n \nJennifer Freedman and Guy Higgins \n\nLessons Learned\, Admired or Observed \nAfter an emergency or an exercise\, most organizations hold a “Lessons Learned” session.  How do you ensure that those lessons are actually “learned” and not merely “observed” or “admired”? \nThis workshop is focused on creating a deep appreciation for the importance of conducting “After Action Reviews” for every emergency drill\, tabletop exercise or actual incident response. \nThere are three goals for conducting an exercise: \n\nTest your plans\nDevelop “muscle memory”\nLearn from the experience\n\nEvery single time an organization uses their emergency or crisis response plans\, they should satisfy each of those three goals.  Too often\, though\, participants in the real or simulated response complete their activity and “get back to (the real) work.”  If the organizational process requires a lessons learned phase\, it is often delegated to a single person to write up and archive.  Such an approach will almost certainly result in a lesson observed\, or perhaps even admired if something exceptional was noted during the test or actual response\, but it will not result in a lesson learned. \nThis interactive workshop will conduct a mock After Action Review and discuss how to actually capture learning from an event. \nAbout CEMA\nCEMA is a professional association representing the public\, private\, volunteer\, and non-government organization (NGO) emergency management community in Colorado.   CEMA’s role is to provide representation on many state-wide committees\, working groups and emergency management program teams.
