Franchisors and franchisees must appreciate the potential brand and reputation impacts the crises and allegations have. In a crisis, the DECISIONS you make, the ACTIONS you take, and the WORDS that you say will determine whether the crisis escalates or stabilizes impacting your franchise family.

All crises are not equal. Understanding a developing crisis and its public perspectives become the foundation to optimize crisis outcomes. How decisions are made in a crisis is critical to the outcome. Ensuring your crisis management leadership is aware of their roles and the need to make decisions based upon available information, data. The crisis approach and policy leads developing contingency plans for actual and potential exposures and threats.

Based on the extensive experience from responding to crisis events, the Firestorm Crisis Index™ and the crisis management concept of using metrics based on the dimensions of OFF (OUTRAGE, FAULT, and FEAR) to evaluate crisis severity were developed and are in use today by multiple types of organizations. This focus is used to direct all DECISIONS, ACTIONS and WORDS to address the most critical crisis dimensions. The REACH, CONTEXT, and ACCELERATION provide the urgency response framework.

The value of any communications must be weighed against the potential exposure or liability created by the communications. An effective crisis communications plan will empower the franchisor to establish the ‘Why’ of all communications.
