Audit & Gap Analysis of Business Continuity Program: Performed program and operational review of Business Continuity Program, at the direction of the board and senior management.  Areas of focus included: program foundation, organizational structure, program roles & responsibilities, operating principles, government & oversight, potential program exposures, PS-Prep and industry standard strategy, and processes for design & execution.

Financial Services: Hedge Fund retained Firestorm to manage regulators, public communications, and investors in the aftermath of suicide of key principal.

Healthcare Advisory & Financial Services: National Research Group hired Firestorm to develop Business Continuity, Communicable Illness, and Emergency Response Plans for its U.S. locations. Completed the following tasks: vulnerability analysis, business impact analysis, critical vendor analysis; document review of existing plans, processes, and procedures; plan development, testing and training.

Hospitality: Performed risk assessment of national hotel chain’s employee following discovery of an anonymous diary containing dark writings and threatening remarks. On location, met with key personnel, performed threat assessment utilizing Expert Council member-Forensic Psychologist, rendered opinion; met with employee, assessed risk and provided recommendations.

Insurance & Financial Services: Global insurer retained Firestorm to conduct investigation surrounding theft of key software within subsidiary company in India; coordinated with Indian law enforcement.

Insurance: Serve as panel experts for several large insurance brokerage firms and companies. On call 24/7/365 to render crisis management and crisis communications services to insureds.

Law Firm: Developed a comprehensive Communicable Illness Plan, Emergency Response Plan, and Employee Emergency Response Guide for the Firm’s headquarters location and nine satellite locations across the U.S. and abroad. Custom designed plans to meet specific needs of each office’s geographic location, building structure and office layout, and staff size. Conducted management and employee training.

Manufacturing: Developed comprehensive Business Continuity Program for a public national chemical company that included a Program Policy and Framework (Strategies), Crisis Management Plan, Business Continuity Plan, Communicable Illness Plan, Emergency Response Plan, and Crisis Communications Guide. Completed comprehensive BIA to determine recovery time and recovery point objectives of critical business functions. Developed strategies and actions for crisis response; conducted management and employee training.

Media: Two news media outlets (NBC affiliate and Public Broadcaster) in major metropolitan area hired Firestorm to update and restructure their business continuity program. Tasks and deliverables included: Crisis Management Plan; Policy & Program Framework; Recovery Strategies; Crisis Management, Business Continuity, and Emergency Response Plans; Employee Emergency Response Guide; Testing; and Training.

Mining: Developed comprehensive Security and Emergency Response, Business continuity, and Crisis Management Plans for its coal mining operations for multiple locations.

Recycling: Assist global recycling firm with many engagements, including investigating employee theft, distributor theft; monitoring of corporate personnel; development of communications strategy, message mapping surrounding legal allegations.

Retail: Performed threat assessment of former employee for pharmacy chain, who was sending threatening emails and packages to former supervisor and board members. Performed a vulnerability analysis, site assessment and retained Expert Council member-Forensic Psychologist to perform risk assessment of former employee, based on written and telephonic communications. Enhanced security using local law-enforcement.

Retail: Developed Communicable Illness Plan for national retailer’s (1000+ locations and 140,000+ employees) corporate location, stores, distribution centers and daycare facilities. Identified HR policies and benefits to be restructured, a rating and analysis approach to critical vendor communicable illness plan review; developed triggers and monitoring plans; conducted site inspections; created social distancing, hygiene, cleaning, telework, communications, and stockpile plans/policies; and designed and conducted test exercise.

School – College: Performed benchmark/gap analysis of security, pandemic, crisis communications plans, processes, and procedures. Completed site inspection of campus and interviews with key administrators.

School – Independent Boarding School: Assisted prestigious private boarding school with a social media networking incident which was potentially damaging to the brand and reputation of the institution. Performed vulnerability analysis, conducted media training of school senior leadership and spokes-personnel, monitored all media outlets, worked with client to develop key messages and message maps.

School- Independent Day School: Risk Assessment and development and implementation of school wide workplace violence prevention program; Crisis Management Team training and test exercises.

School–Medical College: Developed/administered emergency preparedness training and table-top exercises.

School- Public: Working with one of the largest public school districts in America on workplace violence prevention strategies.

School- State University: Hired by President of University in the aftermath of the worst episode of workplace violence in U.S. history. Performed crisis communications and media management; developed messaging and message maps; set up call center; interfaced with media.

Fortune 100 Beverage Company – Restructured Customer Service, Production and Distribution Operations
The company’s goal was to establish clear customer service leadership in the industry while increasing product profitability through internal production and distribution cost reduction. The project teams initially focused on assessing customer service gaps, marketplace competitive positioning and supply chain capabilities and cost performance. An aligned vision across marketing/sales, product development, and supply chain was then developed and finalized. Critically, this vision explicitly included major suppliers and the company’s independent distributors. Short-term improvements were then implemented by the company, its distributors and its key suppliers to fund major restructuring efforts. The restructuring included reallocating products to plant, creating capability focused plants, increased regional customer targeting, creating a pull order management system, rationalizing logistics and transportation suppliers, and leveraging market focused inventory deployment. First year net savings exceeded $30 million. The detailed, long-term product supply strategy has since generated in excess of $350 million annually, and driven significant market share gains.

Global Electronics and Computer Manufacturer – Assessed Supply Chain Risks, and Developed Risk Mitigation & Management Strategies to Ensure Continuity of Operations While Maximizing Cost Effectiveness. The team identified over 250 previously unknown risks including both direct risks to company assets and operations, and indirect risks to critical company suppliers and logistics infrastructure providers. A joint client/consultant team then assessed both the threat probability and potential impacts of major risks. Key high risk suppliers were identified, and major threats to their operations evaluated. Internal and external logistics and infrastructure risks were also evaluated and prioritized, and overall supply chain continuity plans were evaluated. In addition, Supply chain cost and performance drivers were evaluated, breakthrough opportunities were developed and evaluated, and alternative supply chain configurations were examined. The resulting “resilient” supply chain strategy was able to eliminate over half the identified risks and transform almost of the remaining risks into a much more predictable and manageable structure. Supply chain and key supplier action plans were also defined to reduce the impacts of the remaining risks, and detailed risk management plans and alternative product flows were developed for each risk class and specific high impact scenarios. Overall supply chain performance was also increased while supply chain costs were reduces by over 7%.

Leading US Grocery Retailer – Developed and Implemented Supply Chain Procurement, Merchandizing, Assortment Planning and Promotion Strategies. The project addressed all supply chain areas, Category Management functions (shelf management, assortment planning, promotions management and procurement), and all “own brand” manufacturing and co-packer management. The project identified challenges and opportunities across the supply chain and merchandizing areas, and developed aligned “go to market” and supply chain strategies for the company. We then supported the client throughout implementation with program management, change management and critical functional expertise. Supplier selection, product replenishment, production scheduling and distribution/delivery management improvements were developed, and the weekly and monthly event planning process was re-engineered. The results across the first 18 months were over $80 million in measurable, annual savings, a 4% increase in volume and a 12 % increase in profitability.

Global Medical and Specialty Products Company – Developed Integrated Manufacturing and Distribution Strategy Across North America and Europe. The project analyzed all areas of the division and provided a detailed manufacturing and distribution improvement plan for both the company and its key supplier partners. Following implementation, the division substantially reduced its manufacturing costs, implemented tailored logistics streams and more than doubled market share. The organization has restructured from a high-cost manufacturer to the low-cost producer in their industry. Profitability levels now exceed 30% return on capital employed.

Major Food Manufacturer – Analyzed and Restructured Manufacturing, Distribution, and Customer Service Operations. The goal of the project was to maximize customer service levels and product availability while reducing supply chain costs. The first phase focused on identifying the major cost and service drivers, analyzing the focus and performance levels of each production and distribution facility, segmenting and assessing supplier capabilities and reliability, and assessing market segment demand growth in North America, Southeast Asia, and Europe. The resulting supply chain strategy reallocated products among plants, restructured distribution flows, revised transportation modes and lanes, defined channel strategies and restructured the supplier network. The project delivered net first year savings from product to plant rationalization, yield improvements, increased capacity, and a reduction in system-wide inventories. Overall savings upon full implementation exceeded 15% of the company’s cost of goods sold and enabled the company to grow annual volume at over 20% per year.

Fortune 100 Automotive Supplier – Developed Manufacturing and Distribution Strategies. The project involved assessing the company’s existing manufacturing and supplier capabilities, analyzing competitor capabilities and threats, evaluating future product requirements, and identifying the required manufacturing capabilities to support future demands. Detailed implementation plans were developed and have been implemented, resulting in initial savings of over $150 million. Annual cost savings will exceed $300 million within three years.

Multi-billion Dollar Global Consumer Products Company – Developed New Supply Chain Strategy to Provide Differentiated Customer Service Level, Reduce Supplier Risks and Reduce Supply Chain Costs. The project integrated the manufacturing and “direct store delivery” activities of the company, restructured the supply base, and supported the implementation on new ERP software. The ERP solution included factory planning, supply chain scheduling, transportation planning, supplier management and demand planning. Product freshness was significantly improved, out-of-stocks were reduced, inventory turns were improved to an industry leadership position, and the overall supply chain cost savings initially exceeded $100 million.

U.S. Operations of a Global Beverage Company – Managed Re-engineering of All Sales, Consumer Marketing, and Product Supply Activities. The goals of the project were to develop a vision for how the company should operate in the next century, how to improve customer service levels and define enhanced consumer marketing activities, while significantly reduce operations costs. The project team developed overall strategies for each area, and supporting implementation plans focused on tactical improvements over a three-year period. In the marketing area, the result was a major shift of marketing expenditures from mass advertising and heavy promotions to a target marketing focus supported by precision brand building advertising and promotional events. In the customer areas, the project resulted in a reorganization of the sales force, the restructuring of sales roles, and a refocusing of resources onto faster growing channels. In the product supply area, the result was a comprehensive role sort of company, supplier and partner activities, the introduction of outsourced, third-party activities to both reduce cost and increase service levels, selective in-sourcing of critical customer value activities, and a rationalization of new product production capacity. The result was improved customer service and increased sales with a significant long-term reduction in costs.

Large Chemical Manufacturer – Led Joint Consultant/Client Task Force in Re-engineering Global Supply Chain. The team analyzed the external marketplace identifying customer requirements and the future basis of competition. Simultaneously, the team focused on logistics, procurement, manufacturing, procurement and overhead functions to evaluate the major business processes, key suppliers, information systems capabilities, and opportunities to improve. Short- and long-term plans were developed to outsource low return processes, realign supplier partnerships, increase asset utilization, and improve the company’s competitive position. The overall cost structure of the company has been reduced, and the company has gained market share in a no growth industry while increasing overall return on capital by over ten percentage points.
