Imagine.  You head to pick up your child from school and abruptly, the only thing separating you, your daughter and your sister from 200 mile per hour winds are two collapsed walls supporting each other in a triangular formation. You hold your daughter with adrenaline-induced strength while you scream and pray as the realistic fear of being sucked up into a monster overwhelms you. That’s what happened to a family I spoke with who survived the Moore, Oklahoma Tornado. As they cowered for protection at Briarwood Elementary, what we now know to be an E5 tornado, whipped them with flying debris leaving their feet, arms, and heads lacerated by its ferocity. Paige Rucker, an Alabama native, has a diverse background in marketing, media relations, project and crisis management. She is currently involved in disaster recovery for the Alabama Gulf Coast as a result of the largest manmade disaster in history – the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.  She serves as the State Director for Project Rebound, a counseling and resource agency for victims of the oil spill.  She is an Ambassador for the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences GuLF Study as well as the Alabama Liaison for the Louisiana Public Health Institute - Primary Care Capacity Project.  Paige also serves as a Key Informant for the Healthy Gulf Healthy Communities and a member of the Baldwin County Community Alliance.

Both Brett and Paige have witnessed first-hand how a disaster, like the oil spill, can cripple even the most resilient communities.  And if there’s one take away it’s this – Preparedness isn’t a luxury, it’s the cost of doing business.
