How do we survive surviving? By Ann SanCartier for Firestorm

Imagine.  You head to pick up your child from school and abruptly, the only thing separating you, your daughter and your sister from 200 mile per hour winds are two collapsed walls supporting each other in a triangular formation. You hold your daughter with adrenaline-induced strength while you scream and pray as the realistic fear of being sucked up into a monster overwhelms you. That’s what happened to a family I spoke with who survived the Moore, Oklahoma Tornado. As they cowered for protection at Briarwood Elementary, what we now know to be an E5 tornado, whipped them with flying debris leaving their feet, arms, and heads lacerated by its ferocity. As this mother shared her traumatic experience with me, she related that her sister was waiting in their van parked outside the school. When the school advised her that a...

Payments Reach $561,976,781 OKLAHOMA CITY – Insurance claims filed in response to a major tornado outbreak in May jumped to 70,782 Tuesday, with insurance payments reaching $561,976,781. “These numbers are more proof of the dramatic impact the tornadoes had on our state,” said Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak. “Thousands of Oklahomans are now in the process of rebuilding their lives. Insurance can help them do that and I am glad to see that so many of the victims were insured. But the claims process can be complicated. My office is ready to assist consumers in any way possible.” May 19th & 20th Tornadoes Type of Claim                         Claims Received         Payments Made Homeowners    &...

Someone saw something, Someone said something Register here In May of 2013, a 17-year-old in Oregon had planned to bomb his high school in an attack that was “specifically modeled” after Columbine. Benton County District Attorney John Haroldson noted that Grant Acord had every plan to top the 1999 Colorado attack. Albany police became suspicious after they "received information that associated Acord with manufacturing a destructive device with the intent of detonating it at a school."  West Albany High School's principal sent a note to students' parents, asking them to urge their children to come forward and speak with police if they knew anything about the plan.  And someone did.  Someone saw something, someone said something. In Wisconsin, police released more than 50 pages of reports that detailed an alleged plot by two teens to plant bombs at Wauwatosa East High S...

WendysGetsFrosted
#FrostyFail Goes Viral Think about your business.  Right now.  Whether you make tires, run a call center, manufacture widgets, design web products....when you think about your business, one of the first things you should envision are your customers. What do your customers think about when they think of you? Sadly, for companies whose employees have "overshared" on social media, PizzaHut, TacoBell, and now Wendy's, the first thing many customers think is "disgusting". Not an ideal Brand message. This photo of a Wendy's employee streaming ice cream from the soft serve Frosty machine directly into his mouth is making the Internet rounds. The photo, posted Wednesday on the content-sharing site Reddit (caution, objectionable/strong language in comments), came with this note from a customer: "I was going to buy a Frosty from Wendy's until I saw the employee do this. Wendy's spo...

Firestorm Expert Council Member Jack Healey, CPA/CFF, CFE "drives" home his point of looking at risk throughout the entire supply chain - and avoiding dangers in the road along the way... During the week of June 5, 2013, heavy rains caused floods in the Elbe, Danube and Vltava Rivers throughout Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. These rains caused an interruption to many manufacturers' supply chains. In addition to the flooded areas, many companies were affected by disruptions in transportation- especially rail- the primary mode for this region, as the floods caused wide spread outages of service. On June 5, 2013 Porsche was forced to 'slam the brakes' on production at their assembly plant in Leipzig, Germany after the floods in the Czech Republic interrupted the rail service from their Bratislava, Slovakia plant to Porsche's Leipzig, Germany assembly plant. The Br...

As detailed in a report by the FCC in January of this year, in June 2012, portions of the Midwest and Mid-Atlantic regions of the United States experienced a fast-moving, destructive windstorm called a derecho, resulting in twenty-two deaths and left millions without electrical power. Unlike hurricanes and superstorms, which are generally well-forecast, derechos are more like earthquakes, tornadoes, and man-made events for which there is little-to-no advance notice and opportunity to prepare. Now, in June of 2013, we know that there will be fast-moving, strong storms across the Midwest and Northeastern United States, which could replicate the weather conditions of last June. According to MarketWatch, Weather forecasters have been warning that this rare weather phenomenon, which last year left a 700-mile trail of damage across the Midwest and mid-Atlantic, this time could hit a s...

Stan Polit
Bridging the gap between awareness of risk and acting upon risk by Stan Polit, Firestorm Expert Council Member, Merged Media Over the last year, my Wednesday afternoon schedule has been highly predictable. At the end of the day, I will leave my house in west Philadelphia, do some grocery shopping at the local Trader Joe’s, and then stop at the Salvation Army Thrift Store at 22nd and Market Street.  As of early Wednesday morning, I had planned to follow my usual routine. When I heard about the collapse, I was overtaken by a series of emotions. I kept thinking about my plans for the day and the very real possibility that I may have been at the store during the demolition. Many times I had gone into the basement where customers had been trapped and injured. Many times I walked past the building which would ultimately collapse and lead to the death of six people. Many times I had tho...

MERS-CoV Map - www.cdph.ca.gov
Core health challenges in an increasingly mobile world by Firestorm Expert Council Member Donald. A. Donahue, Jr., DHEd, MBA, FACHE The global public health community is closely monitoring the progression of two new diseases, H7N9 Avian Influenza and Middle East Respiratory Symptom Coronavirus (or MERS-CoV).  This process is illustrative of a core health challenge in an increasingly mobile world.  The Black Death that decimated Europe between 1348 and 1350 traveled via wind-powered ship and human and animal overland movement.  The 1918 influenza pandemic that killed perhaps 100 million moved via steamship and motorized transport.  Today, an infected individual can be on the other side of the globe within a day.   The challenge, therefore, is to identify where and when these diseases appear.  Exposures due to local conditions (such as close proximity to do...
