CiaCMoore Tornado Resources - How You Can Help

How do we survive surviving? By Ann SanCartier for Firestorm

Imagine.  You head to pick up your child from school and abruptly, the only thing separating you, your daughter and your sister from 200 mile per hour winds are two collapsed walls supporting each other in a triangular formation. You hold your daughter with adrenaline-induced strength while you scream and pray as the realistic fear of being sucked up into a monster overwhelms you. That’s what happened to a family I spoke with who survived the Moore, Oklahoma Tornado. As they cowered for protection at Briarwood Elementary, what we now know to be an E5 tornado, whipped them with flying debris leaving their feet, arms, and heads lacerated by its ferocity. As this mother shared her traumatic experience with me, she related that her sister was waiting in their van parked outside the school. When the school advised her that a...

Senior Security/Anti-Terrorism Strategist Yftah Kaluski Joins Firestorm Expert Council Firestorm is pleased to announce the addition of Senior Security Expert Yftah Kaluski to the Firestorm Expert Council. "I was attracted to Firestorm for two key reasons," said Mr. Kaluski; "First, 'Every Crisis is a Human Crisis'.  When working with client companies to identify security and threat vulnerabilities, I have always looked at the people in the company as closely as facilities, technologies, processes and systems. Second, the Firestorm Expert Council is recognized worldwide for the depth of excellence and expertise of its members." About Yftah Yftah Kaluski worked for Guardsmark LLC (Guardsmark is the fourth largest security company in the world), from 2001 until April 2013.  For the past four and a half years he served in the capacity of Vice President Regional Manager. Stan Polit
What Tiger Woods can teach crisis managers about organizational resilienceby Stan Polit, Firestorm Expert Council Member, Merged Media Much to the joy of some and the chagrin of others, Tiger Woods is once again the number one golfer in the world.  Golf rarely has moments that capture the public’s attention, so it worth taking a moment to reflect on the journey Tiger has endured to return to this point. Few athletes have ever experienced such a rapid fall from grace and such a pronounced recovery.  It is not so long ago that the thought of Tiger once again being the world’s best golfer seemed almost unthinkable.  Embroiled in a crisis fueled by allegations of morally blameworthy behavior, we watched as a once invincible athlete appeared much more human than we initially wanted to admit. With these struggles certainly in mind, it did not take long for Nike to celebrate T...

John Plodinec of CARRI
The American Dream is an essential component of the Resilience Movement by Firestorm Expert Council Member Dr. John Plodinec, CARRI On my CARRI blog page last month, I presented my view of where America is in terms of resilience. I argued that by too many measures, we are less resilient than we once were, and our trajectory is negative. However, we must recognize that the American Dream is an essential component of our resilience. Our resilience as a nation and as individuals is entwined with the idea that this is the land of opportunity, that there are no bounds on what we can ultimately achieve except those we set ourselves. This has imbued us with self-confidence and a certain faith in the future. While many still believe in the American Dream, others can no longer see its relevance in today’s world. Thus, if we are to change our trajectory, we must reinvigorate the American Dream...

Firestorm, along with the country, mourns the passing at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, of one of our original Expert Council members, C. Everett Koop.  Dr. Koop was 96. Dr. Koop was the 13th Surgeon General of the United States, from 1981 to 1989 during the Reagan administration and the early months of the administration of George H.W. Bush. "Dr. Koop will be remembered for his colossal contributions to the health and well-being of patients and communities in the U.S. and around the world," said a statement released by Chip Souba, dean of the Geisel School of Medicine and Joseph O'Donnell, senior scholar at the C. Everett Koop Institute. "As one of our country's greatest surgeons general, he effectively promoted health and the prevention of disease, thereby improving millions of lives in our nation and across the globe." He is best remembered for his official 1986 report on...

ConerlyQuote
On Uncertainty and Risk Management In a recent Forbes article, Bill Conerly discusses uncertainty and risk management, referencing Firestorm Expert Council member Gary Patterson's book, Million Dollar Blinds Spots: 20/20 Vision for Financial Growth. Mr. Conerly "gets" Mr. Patterson's thesis: unearth key risk areas and identify opportunities leading to sustainable growth, buzz-worthy customer value, and impressive profitability, while simplifying to foster faster, better decision-making. It's a commonsense approach to risk management. Mr. Conerly summarizes Gary's risk response categories well: avoidance (don’t do the act which brings forth the risk), reduction (reduce the probability of the event or the damage of the event), sharing (spread the risk, such as through insurance), and acceptance (live with it)." Moreover, Mr. Conerly's attitude toward the Black Swan Event is s...

MearsBook
Firestorm Expert Council Member Carolyn Lunsford Mears, Ph.D., wrote the following essay for Education Week in light of the tragic shootings in Newtown, CT.  I have been fortunate to speak with Dr, Mears at length regarding this and like-tragedies, and believe she brings a unique, empathetic yet practical point-of-view, helpful to all touched by this immensely appalling event. I have read Carolyn's anthology, Reclaiming School in the Aftermath of Trauma: Advice Based on Experience, that provides real-life stories of traumatic events, and encourage any invested in this subject to do so as well. Each chapter describes approaches that educators, administrators, students, and staff found helpful as they returned their school or university to the business of teaching and learning.   After the Tragedy, What Next? On Community Resiliency  "I want to explore three related questions – who’s coming back, how are they coming back, and how will they/should they rebuild." By Dr. John Plodinec, Firestorm Expert Council Member.  John is the Associate Director for the Community and Regional Resilience Institute (CARRI) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In this role, he is responsible for identifying and evaluating technologies useful for enhancing community resilience. He also is playing a leading role in development of CARRI’s Community Resilience System. He has been heavily involved with CARRI’s engagement with the Charleston, SC, region. Read more about Dr. Plodinec here I’ve tried to keep a relatively low profile about Sandy – there’s still a lot of pain out there, and people don’t need us in the blogosphere adding to it.  But the power is almost all back on now, the debris is being c...
