How do we survive surviving? By Ann SanCartier for Firestorm

Imagine.  You head to pick up your child from school and abruptly, the only thing separating you, your daughter and your sister from 200 mile per hour winds are two collapsed walls supporting each other in a triangular formation. You hold your daughter with adrenaline-induced strength while you scream and pray as the realistic fear of being sucked up into a monster overwhelms you. That’s what happened to a family I spoke with who survived the Moore, Oklahoma Tornado. As they cowered for protection at Briarwood Elementary, what we now know to be an E5 tornado, whipped them with flying debris leaving their feet, arms, and heads lacerated by its ferocity. As this mother shared her traumatic experience with me, she related that her sister was waiting in their van parked outside the school. When the school advised her that a...

SOCIAL MEDIA FIRESTORMS Hacks, attacks and alerts from Firestorm US Embassy in Cairo Twitter Account: As detailed on the PR Daily website, "It appears the U.S. State Department has a Twitter problem." For the second time in six months, the U.S. Embassy in Cairo created diplomatic waves with its Twitter account, and at least one PR professional thinks it’s time for the State Department to review its social media policy. The most recent incident occurred on Tuesday when Embassy Cairo, as it’s called in diplomatic circles, tweeted a link to a “Daily Show” segment about an Egyptian TV personality—billed as that nation’s Jon Stewart—who had been arrested for criticizing President Mohamed Morsi. The tweet drew a harsh rebuke from the Twitter account of the Muslim Brotherhood as well as from Morsi’s official Twitter account. A State Department spokesperson chalked up the incident t...

Yftah Kaluski
Senior Security/Anti-Terrorism Strategist Yftah Kaluski Joins Firestorm Expert Council Firestorm is pleased to announce the addition of Senior Security Expert Yftah Kaluski to the Firestorm Expert Council. "I was attracted to Firestorm for two key reasons," said Mr. Kaluski; "First, 'Every Crisis is a Human Crisis'.  When working with client companies to identify security and threat vulnerabilities, I have always looked at the people in the company as closely as facilities, technologies, processes and systems. Second, the Firestorm Expert Council is recognized worldwide for the depth of excellence and expertise of its members." About Yftah Yftah Kaluski worked for Guardsmark LLC (Guardsmark is the fourth largest security company in the world), from 2001 until April 2013.  For the past four and a half years he served in the capacity of Vice President Regional Manager. As suc...

Ann SanCartier, Firestorm Expert Council Member and Employee Crisis Planning Expert, discusses ways organizations can meet the needs of victims and families. Examples include having group debriefings, setting up a Family Assistance Center, and making emergency preparedness part of the company’s culture.(This article is part of a larger paper with contributions from Firestorm Principals and Expert Council Members) Firestorm© understands that “Every Crisis in a Human Crisis”.  For your employees, sympathetically (and empathetically) responding to a crisis event, while remaining in control of the situation, is extremely important.  It is equally important to thoroughly understand the short- and long-term emotional and physical impact a crisis event has directly on victims and their families, as well as indirectly on the uninjured members of the community. At the onset of a cris...

Alabama Barge Explosion
Supply Chain Questions Follow Crisis Events By John P. Campi, Managing Partner, Genesis Management Firefighters on Thursday 4/25/3013 extinguished a huge blaze that erupted hours earlier when two fuel barges exploded in Mobile, Ala., leaving three people with critical burns and forcing the evacuation of crew from a nearby cruise ship. A friend of mine has a great saying “the last time a surprise was good, I was five years old and it was my birthday.” So on the evening of April 24th, we got a surprise impact to one of the important supply chain links for many organizations.  The port of Mobile was closed due to a massive explosion and fire on a barge in the river. This is just one more example of the vulnerability of critical elements of today’s supply chains.  Our dependency on these links has increased dramatically as we have expanded our supply networks over the past dec...

Hugo Teso Shares PlaneSploit Findings At the Hack In The Box conference in Amsterdam, security consultant Hugo Teso demonstrated PlaneSploit, an app he developed that can take control of certain systems aboard an airplane and cause it to change direction or just crash itself into the ground. "It's amazing to discover that aviation - an industry where safety is of vital importance and every physical element has one or even two fail-safe mechanisms - is failing to secure the onboard computer, the heart and brain of the plane." The fourth annual HITB Security Conference concluded yesterday. As detailed on the net-security website, an extremely well attended talk at the event by Hugo Teso, a security consultant at n.runs AG in Germany, covered the completely realistic scenario of plane hijacking via a simple Android app, and galvanized the crowd attending the Amsterdam conference. Accor...

Risk Management and Experiential Program Design in Education By Guest Contributor, Ann McCollum, Experiential Program Design Expert A sound approach to managing risk in travel and experiential programs is to pursue excellence and to practice industry standards and preferred practices . . . rather than “how to avoid a lawsuit.”  That said, Hotchkiss School’s recent $41.7 million settlement over a student contracting encephalitis on a China trip should get your attention.  (See New York Times: Conn. Student Disabled on School Trip Wins $41.7M New York Times: Conn. Student Disabled on School Trip Wins $41.7M) Potentially preventable? Yes.  There are few things that could have been done to prevent this event. First, the school’s pre-travel risk management plan should have included a risk assessment of the area to be travelled.  The assessment would have identifie...

Stan Polit
What Tiger Woods can teach crisis managers about organizational resilienceby Stan Polit, Firestorm Expert Council Member, Merged Media Much to the joy of some and the chagrin of others, Tiger Woods is once again the number one golfer in the world.  Golf rarely has moments that capture the public’s attention, so it worth taking a moment to reflect on the journey Tiger has endured to return to this point. Few athletes have ever experienced such a rapid fall from grace and such a pronounced recovery.  It is not so long ago that the thought of Tiger once again being the world’s best golfer seemed almost unthinkable.  Embroiled in a crisis fueled by allegations of morally blameworthy behavior, we watched as a once invincible athlete appeared much more human than we initially wanted to admit. With these struggles certainly in mind, it did not take long for Nike to celebrate T...

Activity Based Management - John Campi
Performance Metrics for Today's Market by Firestorm Expert Council Member John P. Campi, Managing Partner, Genesis Management More than twenty years ago, I authored an article on performance metrics which was subsequently published in “Handbook for Productivity Measurement and Improvement” by Productivity Press in 1993.  It is interesting to revisit this article and reassess where we are today. At the time, the United States was dealing with the impact of Japanese companies, specifically within the auto industry, moving to take a dominant position in the US market.  Clearly, we had not been paying appropriate attention to the performance metrics that mattered to our customer base.  Apparent lack of attention to quality within the US auto industry had driven many auto buyers to perceive autos made by Toyota and Honda as having superior product quality.  Buyers were ...

Firestorm, along with the country, mourns the passing at his home in Hanover, New Hampshire, of one of our original Expert Council members, C. Everett Koop.  Dr. Koop was 96. Dr. Koop was the 13th Surgeon General of the United States, from 1981 to 1989 during the Reagan administration and the early months of the administration of George H.W. Bush. "Dr. Koop will be remembered for his colossal contributions to the health and well-being of patients and communities in the U.S. and around the world," said a statement released by Chip Souba, dean of the Geisel School of Medicine and Joseph O'Donnell, senior scholar at the C. Everett Koop Institute. "As one of our country's greatest surgeons general, he effectively promoted health and the prevention of disease, thereby improving millions of lives in our nation and across the globe." He is best remembered for his official 1986 report on...
